The marigold flower, or Cempasúchil, symbolizes the Day of the Dead in Mexico, thanks to its color and aroma it is one of the most representative elements of the offerings for the dead.

The marigold flower (Cempasúchil) is native to Mexico, its name comes from the Nahuatl “Cempohualxochitl” which means “twenty flowers” or “several flowers”.

Scientifically, marigold is called “Tagetes erecta” and is a plant exclusive to the American continent. It grows in Mexico, Central America, and even South America.

It is said there are about 58 species, but very few are used for Day of the Dead purposes. In Mexico it is estimated the presence of 35 species of the flower, of the 58 referred for America.

In our country, the states of Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Michoacán and Estado de México are the ones with the best soil and climate conditions for the production of marigold. This flower only blooms after the rainy season.

Our ancestors assimilated the yellow color of the marigold flower with the sun, reason why they used it in the offerings dedicated in honor to their dead. The tradition marks to make paths with the marigolds, from the main road to the altar of the house with the purpose of guiding the souls to the altars.

The flower was considered by the Mexica as a symbol of life and death.

The flower’s stem can reach up to one meter in height, while its buds can reach five centimeters in diameter.

On November 1 and 2 the dead are celebrated in our country, these are days when we can appreciate the most intense color and smell of the flower.

China and the marigold.

Despite being a native species to Mexico, China is the main producer of marigold for industrial use, with three quarters of the world’s marigold. This exploitation of marigold cultivation by China lies in the properties of this plant, which has several other uses besides ritual.

Interesting facts of the flower.

Essential oils are extracted from the plant to manufacture agrochemicals to combat insects and are used in the poultry industry to make chicken meat and egg yolks yellower.

Another characteristic of the marigold flower is its short life; most marigold flowers are annuals, meaning they are born and only live for one season. But because they have many seeds, they reproduce very easily.

And for centuries, different parts of the plant have been used for medical purposes, as an infusion when you have a stomach ailment, to relieve flatulence, to help the respiratory tract, and even to improve sexual desire.

The flower of the ritual and its legend:

Legend has it that Xóchitl and Huitzilin were in love since they were children and that in the afternoons they climbed the mountain dedicated to Tonatiuh, the Aztec god of the sun, and offered him bouquets of flowers.

But one day war broke out and Huitzilin went to fight to defend the Aztec lands and died.

Shattered with grief, Xóchitl asked the god Tonatiuh to free her from her suffering and reunite her with her beloved. The sun god complied with the request and let his rays fall on Xóchitl, and she was transformed into a bright yellow flower. Then a hummingbird landed in the center of the flower and it opened its 20 petals releasing an intense aroma.

Following Tonatiuh’s command, the Aztec couple’s love will remain as long as there are hummingbirds and cempasúchil flowers in the Mexican fields.

So now you know a little bit more why this flower is so important to Mexico and its people!

Want to go to England?

It is logical that England is the reference for language courses. Universities such as Oxford, Cambridge or London give it absolute legitimacy. Students have the opportunity to learn authentic British English.

In London, you live to the rhythm of Big Ben. Strolling along the Thames, in Hyde Park, visiting the soccer stadiums, shopping in Camden Town or in the covered gallery in Covent Garden, there is something for everyone. Canada is one of the most adventurous countries to learn English. Just outside every city, there are parks and small towns to ski, hike, climb or connect with nature. The people welcome you warmly, as this is a country open to immigration. It is true that some Canadians seem a bit distant, but let them get to know you.

¿Quieres ir a Inglaterra?

Es lógico que Inglaterra sea la referencia para los cursos de idiomas. Universidades como Oxford, Cambridge o Londres le dan una legitimidad absoluta. Los estudiantes tienen la oportunidad de aprender el auténtico inglés británico.

En Londres, se vive al ritmo del Big Ben. Pasear por el Támesis, por Hyde Park, visitar los estadios de fútbol, comprar en Camden Town o en la galería cubierta de Covent Garden, hay algo para todos. Piccadilly Circus – no muy lejos de la tienda de M&Ms – es el lugar lógico para que los jóvenes salgan por la tarde. Es mejor si te inscribes directamente en una escuela internacional que a través de una agencia de viajes: tendrás la oportunidad de alojarte más fácilmente en el centro de Londres.

No muy lejos de Londres, encontramos Bristol, un tesoro escondido y más accesible económicamente. Inglaterra siempre se ha considerado uno de los mejores lugares para aprender inglés en el extranjero y aquí seguro lo puedes lograr. No dudes en ir a un curso de idiomas. Algunas de las cosas que hay que hacer en Nueva York son jugar al fútbol en Central Park, comer un perrito caliente o un trozo de pizza en torno a la iluminada Times Square, y pasear por el puente de Brooklyn para revivir las mejores escenas del cine americano (Batman, Soy leyenda, etc.). Los que quieran ver de cerca la Estatua de la Libertad pueden dar un paseo en barco por el río Hudson (unos 25 dólares por un viaje de 3 horas). Por último, tienes que ir de compras por las calles principales (Broadway) para traerte algunos recuerdos de “NY” para tus amigos. También puedes visitar la tienda de Lego en Rockefeller Plaza, que es muy impresionante.

¿Quieres ir a Irlanda?

Dublín ofrece una interesante alternativa con su fuerte identidad cultural. El acento irlandés es inimitable. Canadá es uno de los países más aventureros para aprender inglés. A las afueras de cada ciudad, hay parques y pequeños pueblos para esquiar, hacer senderismo, escalar o conectar con la naturaleza. La gente te acoge con cariño, ya que este es un país abierto a la inmigración. Es cierto que algunos canadienses parecen un poco distantes, pero deja que te conozcan.

Ahora también, si estudiar en una ciudad segura, con un clima suave, muchas actividades al aire libre en cualquier época del año, vistas espectaculares, buen café y una de las mejores comidas asiáticas de Norteamérica suena ideal, Vancouver puede ser perfecta para ti. Esta ciudad canadiense ha protegido su entorno natural limitando estratégicamente la expansión urbana y cuidando los espacios verdes, incluido el Parque Stanley, de 405 hectáreas (famoso por sus tótems, un buen ejemplo de arte tradicional).

What time and where to see the DC Fandome 2021

In this edition of the DC Fandome have confirmed their presence personalities like Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz, interpreters of The Batman, the new film of the Dark Knight, and its director, Matt Reeves, of which everything indicates that we will have a new trailer, but there will be more. Banksy’s self-destructed artwork breaks artist’s record and sells for $25.4 million

Banksy’s Girl with Balloon painting, which partially self-destructed during a London auction three years ago, was sold Thursday (14.10.2021) for 18.6 million pounds ($25.4 million or 21.8 million euros), a record for the British graffiti artist.

The work, renamed Love is in the Bin, surpassed the last record set in March by Game Changer, which was acquired by an anonymous buyer for £14.4 million.

The famous urban artist, whose identity remains a mystery, stunned the world at the auction that took place three years ago at Sotheby’s in London, the same auction house that auctioned what was left of the work this Thursday.

No sooner had the hammer sounded to award the painting to the highest bidder than a mechanism hidden in the frame shattered the lower part of the canvas, which depicts a girl releasing a heart-shaped balloon. Now only the balloon remains on a white background.

With this action, Banksy said he wanted to denounce the “commodification” of art.

In the statement announcing the sale, Sotheby’s described the destruction as the “most spectacular artistic happening of the 21st century”, framed “in the heritage of countercultural art that began with Dadaism and Marcel Duchamp“.

“Girl with Balloon” shows a girl reaching for a heart-shaped balloon. It is one of Banksy’s most famous works and has been reproduced numerous times since it first appeared on a wall in East London. Prior to the auction, the work will be shown in a traveling exhibition in London, Hong Kong, Taipei and New York. The true identity of its creator remains unknown to this day.

A new Superman for the new times

The story will appear in the fifth issue of ‘Son of Kal-El’, which will hit bookstores on November 9.

DC Comics has described the new Superman in the text as “bisexual” and titles it “Jon Kent Finds His Identity”.

A bunch of strangers competing in a series of children’s games. With this premise we might think that The squid game is a series with a certain familiar tone. However, if we add that the participants risk their lives in each of these challenges, things change radically. This is Netflix’s new Korean bet, which tries to bring us closer to its traditional games by adding a bloody and dark element. ‘The Squid Game’, used some elements to create the shape of a mollusk on the floor, so the circles, squares and triangles are recurring symbols within the series.

What is the meaning of the codex or drawings on the walls?

The most observant fans of ‘The Squid Game’, noticed that every challenge faced by the main characters throughout the series, had been revealed early on, in the codices that appear on the walls of the room and in other places such as the one in the antechamber of the finale.

In a scene that introduces the premise of the survival competition, the camera pans to show the back of the room. Upon closer inspection, however, the illustrations revealed all of the games that the participants would engage in during their time in the competition.

Each game that the 456 people participated in are traditional children’s games played in South Korea, with different variations of them found all over the world. What do the red and blue cards that appear at the beginning of ‘Squid Game’ mean?

At the beginning of the ‘Squid Game’, Seong Gi Hun meets a stranger with a suitcase of money and two red and blue cards. After a small talk the stranger gives him to choose one of the cards, Seong chooses the red one. There is a theory that if our hero had taken the blue card, he would have become one of the workers of ‘The Squid Game’ , a masked man in a red jacket, instead of a gambler.

What does the doll represent in ‘Squid Game’?

In the very first episode, after the competitors are recruited, the first challenge they face occurs in the children’s playground. With the men in red carrying guns, the group is surprised by a giant doll. Through megaphones the rules of the game are explained, while the doll sings a song called ‘Green Light, Red Light’.

This figure represents what would become an executioner, as the players, who until that moment did not know what was going to happen to them, must fight for their lives. If they do not pass the established line, they will die.

However, for many, the doll represents the loss of innocence and the way in which we change as people.

Why are eliminated players put in a gift box in ‘The Squid Game’?

Another thing you probably noticed in ‘Squid Game’ were the black gift boxes with a pink bow. Every time a player is eliminated, in ‘The Squid Game’, the workers bring a box that looks like a gift to put them inside it, as if it were a coffin.The real meaning of the gift boxes is that the less people have the chance to win, the more money they receive.

What do the numbers in ‘Squid Game’ mean?

The numbers were not placed arbitrarily either. If you look closely, Seong Gi Hun, the protagonist of the series, has the number 456, a number that is not only equal to the numerical sequence of the prize (45.6 billion won), but also symbolizes the will: effort (number 4), challenges (number 5), balance and responsibility (number 6).
